Abstract-
The effectiveness of view synthesis in free-viewpoint video is affected by the quality losses incurred during the compression of depth sequences. The intra prediction of depth maps in the 3D extensions of HEVC employs intra modes in conjunction with auxiliary depth modeling modes (DMMs) to improve the retention of depth edges and efficiently handle motion discontinuities. While these modes facilitate highly efficient compression, they do so at the expense of very high encoding complexity. In this paper, we introduce a novel low-complexity scheme for compressing depth video, utilizing low-rank tensor decomposition in conjunction with HEVC intra coding. The proposed scheme leverages on both spatial and temporal redundancies by efficiently representing the depth sequence as a higher order tensor. Tensor factorization into a set of factor matrices following CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition through alternating least squares provides a low-rank approximation of the scene’s geometry. Moreover, the compression of factor matrices utilizing HEVC intra prediction allows for arbitrary target accuracy through the flexible modification of bitrate, as well as adjustments to tensor decomposition ranks and quantization parameters. The findings indicate that the suggested method realizes substantial improvements in data rates by effectively compressing depth planes using a low-rank approximation. This algorithm has been utilized to encode the depth maps of the benchmark
sequences “Ballet” and “Breakdancing”. The resulting decoded depth sequences are employed for view synthesis within a multiview video system, ensuring that the rendering quality remains satisfactory.
