It’s almost summer time! Here’s how to tell if your cat is too hot—and when to actually worry.

1. They’re flopped out like they just gave up.
You’ll know this look: full-body stretch, belly exposed, legs out like roadkill. Laying flat on cool floors helps them release body heat. If you’re seeing more extreme flopping than usual, especially during the hottest hours, your cat might be struggling to stay cool.

2. Panting is happening—yes, panting.
This is usually overlooked!!! Unlike dogs, cats should not pant. If your cat is breathing with their mouth open, tongue out, or breathing fast and shallow, that’s a serious warning sign. It usually means their body is too hot to regulate properly. Don’t brush it off—get them in a cooler space immediately and call your vet if it doesn’t stop.

3. They’re acting weirdly quiet or hiding.
Cats love to nap, sure. But if they’re suddenly extra quiet, hiding in the darkest spot in the house, or just not engaging with anything at all—something’s off. When cats are overheated, they naturally seek cool, dark places to escape the heat. But if they’re also lethargic, refusing to move, or looking dazed, that’s when it turns into a real concern.

4. Drinking way too much—or not enough.
Cats are picky with water, but when they’re too hot, they either drink excessively or not at all. Both are red flags. If they’re gulping water constantly, their body might be desperate to cool down. If they stop drinking, it could mean they’re already dehydrated and not feeling well enough to fix it on their own. Either way, watch that bowl like a hawk.

5. Their ears and paws feel hot—like, really hot.
Cats don’t sweat like we do. Instead, they release heat through their paw pads and ears. If you touch them and they feel warmer than usual, it’s a subtle but SERIOUS sign that your cat might be overheating. This is especially important if you live somewhere humid, where heat is harder for cats to escape from.
