The LRT line to Hölderlinplatz in Stuttgart was opened in 2002 and replaced the old tram line 4 on exact the same branch. Main differences between the LRT and the trams: the LRT is standard gauge with wide, high floor vehicles, the trams had the gauge of 1 meter, narrower and could be boarded only via low floor platforms – though the vehicles from the 1960s themselves were not exactly low.
In this video we take the modern LRT line U4 to Hölderlinplatz from the tunnel station Charlottenplatz. It is interesting to see those bulky trains switch from the tunnel section to a part with mixed traffic and a high floor platform in the middle of urban roads.
