TPD stands for Total and Permanent Disability. It is a type of insurance benefit which gets paid to you if you cease work due to illness or injury and are permanently unable to work in your old job, work that you are trained to do, or in some cases, work that you could be retrained to do.

WHAT IS A TPD BENEFIT?

A TPD benefit is a lump sum insurance benefit. These benefits are usually used by a sick or injured person to reduce debt and get some financial security. They can be life-changing.

TPD insurance benefits are often provided to superannuation fund members via group policies of insurance. This means that even if you did not go and buy a policy from the insurer, you may be covered by one in your superannuation account.

They are called group policies because as a member of a superannuation fund you are put into a group along with all other fund members and provided insurance. Providing insurance this way is often the most cost-effective way to provide people with insurance; even if you didn’t know about it.

If you have cover and you have ceased work because you are sick or injured you should consider bringing a claim.

TPD benefits which are held in your superannuation account are usually paid by the insurer directly into your super fund and then you can make a separate application to your super fund to access the money early. If you have bought the policy directly, the TPD benefit will usually be paid to you directly.

WHO HAS TPD INSURANCE COVER?

Before you can claim a TPD benefit, you need to work out if you are covered by an insurance policy.

For some people, this will be obvious because they will have bought the policy directly or through a financial advisor. For other people, they may be insured through their super fund and so it will be less obvious.

If you have ever worked and had a super fund, there is a good chance that you have also had TPD insurance.

WHO SHOULD CLAIM TPD BENEFITS?

If you are sick or injured and have ceased work before retirement age, you should check your entitlements and get some advice.

If the sickness or injury means that you are unlikely to return to your old job or any other work that is within your education or training, you have a good chance of successfully bringing a claim.

HOW TO CLAIM TPD BENEFITS

The first step in claiming a TPD benefit is working out that you had TPD insurance cover when you last worked. We can do a free superannuation check for you if you would like to know if you had TPD cover.

If you did have TPD cover when you last worked, and you stopped work because of sickness or injury, the next step would be getting all of the claim forms and medical forms completed and submitting them to the insurer.

This can be tricky and it’s really important to make sure that the information you put on the claim forms and the medical evidence you submit supports your claim. Making mistakes at this stage can lead to your claim being rejected. And you don’t want that!

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY TPD CLAIM IS ACCEPTED?

If you claim a TPD benefit and your claim is accepted, your lump sum insurance benefit will be paid to you directly or into your superannuation account.

TPD benefits can be a lot of money. We have helped people claim benefits which range in size from around $10,000 to millions of dollars. Being paid these benefits can be life-changing.

Once you are paid the benefit, there are few restrictions on what can be done with the money. Many people use it to pay off mortgages, access medical treatment which they could otherwise not afford or just to provide the family or themselves with financial security. Others leave it in their super fund and invest it or have it rolled into another super fund.

WILL A SUCCESSFUL TPD CLAIM IMPACT MY CENTRELINK BENEFITS?

No. In most cases, a TPD benefit is considered to be an asset from a Centrelink perspective and will not impact your ongoing Centrelink payments unless if takes you over the assets’ threshold.
