On this episode of The Jim Masters Show entertainment, lifestyle, celebrity talk show series we celebrate the iconic and ground-breaking Norman Lear television situation comedy Maude Best-selling author Elva Diane Green joins host Jim Masters shares behind the scenes stories about the beloved TV series and Elva's new book, MAUDE! Starring Bea Arthur in her own words - A Real Pussycat. MAUDE, a television sitcom created by producer Norman Lear ran from 1972-1978. The show was in the top ten Neilsen ratings until just before it’s cancellation. Maude starred Beatrice Arthur, Bill Macy, Conrad Bain, Adrienne Barbeau and Rue McClannahan. Cast members included Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley, Marlene Warfield, J. Pat O’Malley, Brian Morrison and Kraig Metzinger.
Maude, as attested to in the theme song “And Then There’s Maude” was “uncompromisin', enterprisin', anything but tranquilizin.” According to Beatrice Arthur, the Maude character was “an obstinate, opinionated do-gooder, who was always doing the right thing, was politically correct, but somehow wound up being made to look the fool.” Bill Macy, as Walter, Maude’s fourth husband, was an appliance store owner. Walter loved Maude despite their many arguments.
Beatrice Arthur was chosen specifically to play Maude, although she only had two things in common with her character – she was tall, and she had a deep voice. She would win a PrimeTime Academy Award in 1977 for her portrayal of Maude.
Maude dealt with controversial subjects of the times. such as women’s lib, and abortion, while delving into other unhappy subjects such as suicide and homelessness. Maude also provided audiences with hours of laugh out loud comedy. There were well-known guests such as Henry Fonda, Roscoe Lee Browne, Nanette Fabray and John Wayne. The show remains a favorite and can still be seen in reruns.
Elva Diane Green, the author of this book, has continued her book writing achievements with this fun, well-researched and interesting book. Elva’s two prior books are the award-winning biography of her father “Eddie Green The Rise of an Early 1900s Black American Entertainment Pioneer” and “The Jeffersons A fresh look back.”Elva was born in Los Angeles, California to Eddie and Norma Green and continues to live in California. Elva’s writing career began after thirty years of working as an administrative assistant with the County of Los Angeles Data Processing Department, The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, and The Department of Veteran’s Affairs. After retiring Elva enrolled in Los Angeles Community College and Pierce College where she majored in Psychology.
During this time Elva’s grandson was born with a learning disability due to a birth injury. In school he had trouble keeping up and would always say “I can’t.” Because of this, Elva decided to write a book dedicated to him about his great-grandfather, Eddie Green, a Black man born in 1891 in the slums of Baltimore, Maryland who, despite the obstacles of that time was able to become quite successful as a composer, comedian, radio star, filmmaker, producer and actor before his death in 1950. That book started Elva’s successful writing journey: “Eddie Green The Rise of an Early 1900s Black American Entertainment Pioneer,” which published in 2016 and won The Foreword Review 2016 INDIES Book of the Year Award, “The Jeffersons A Fresh Look Back,” published in 2022, and thanks to a request made by her publisher, her third book, “MAUDE! In her own words “A real pussycat,” which published in July 2024.
Elva has been interviewed on radio including Yesterday USA Radio with Walden Hughes, and on In Black America, NPR, with John L. Hanson, Jr. She has been written up in The Los Angeles Wave Newspaper, and has written many articles. There have been Facebook interviews with Barbara Beckley, and Tracy Lamourie, and many Twitter podcast interviews with DrPopCulture, TV HerSTORY, and Meanstreets, just to name a few.
This journey is ongoing. Elva’s next book will be on the 1970s TV sitcom “Good Times.”
