February 25, 2024. I remember crying to my therapist about turning 25. Everything felt heavy. Life had already put me through so much, and I felt like I hadn’t accomplished anything before hitting that age. Growing up, 25 was always the age where I thought everything would fall into place. Kids, marriage, and most importantly, my degree. The degree was really what I kept coming back to.

My therapist stopped me mid-cry and said, “Do you not realize how much you’ve already accomplished in your 20s? Do I need to make a list? Maybe that still wouldn’t matter, but Mary, if you want to change your life, that choice is on you. No one is going to hold your hand and do it for you. You have to get up and do it yourself. If school is what you want, then do it and apply.”

That conversation woke me up.

Later that spring, I applied for FAFSA and went back to my community college in New Jersey to finish my associate degree in psychology. While wrapping up my degree, I found an old note in my phone that simply said “Delaware State University,” along with the requirements for my program. That was my sign.

A realization hit me hard. There was no reason to stay stuck. No kids. No marriage. Nothing holding me back except myself and my fear. So I took the leap. I applied to Delaware State University, and I got in!

Now here I am. I’m 26, went back to school at 25, and I’m finishing my last two years at an HBCU I dreamed of attending since I was 17. God is truly good, and He is the reason for this journey. Amen 🙏🏾
