Greece shut more ancient tourist sites and schools in Athens on Thursday and elderly people took refuge at designated cooling centres, as the first major heatwave of the summer persists.

Sitting in air-conditioned shelters set up by the municipality, many elderly people said they could not remember such high temperatures in the past, while others dealt with the heat with humour.

Tourists flocked to the famous Acropolis to see it before it closed due to the heat, armed with fans, umbrellas and hats. Some tourists said the June heatwave had taken them by surprise, as they had not expected such hot weather so early in the summer.

Other tourist attractions were also closed on Thursday afternoon as winds from North Africa pushed temperatures towards 43 degrees Celsius.
