Samsung is showing off its Micro LED screen technology at CES, a development intended to make modular televisions a reality.
The South Korean tech giant also announced that its TVs will start offering Apple's iTunes movies and TV shows, beginning this spring.
STORYLINE:
This 75-inch Micro LED television is a vision of the future, according to Samsung.
The gadget made its debut at the South Korean tech giant's CES "First Look" event.
The TV displays are made up of individual modules of self-emissive Micro LEDS.
The modular nature of the screen tech means owners can customize their screen to fit any room or space or create irregular-shaped screens. The displays are bezel-free (frame-free), meaning there's no border between the modules.
"By adding or removing modules, Micro LED can be nearly any size that you want. And by rearranging those modules, Micro LED can be whatever shape that you want," explains Andrew Sivori, vice president of TV product marketing at Samsung Electronics America.
"So, whether you want a 75-inch Micro LED or a screen that takes up an entire wall in your home, or maybe even a one-by-seven vertical window, Micro LED will give you the power to create whatever you want."
Samsung also announced Sunday that its TVs will start offering Apple's iTunes movies and TV shows beginning this spring.
It's a shift for Apple, which typically hasn't allowed its services to run on non-Apple hardware. The big exception: iTunes on Windows PCs.
"That's actually a really interesting development from my point of view, because up to now we've had these kind of locked down proprietary walled garden approach for content and it meant that consumers had to buy multiple different devices if they wanted access," says Paul Gagnon, an analyst from IHS Markit.
CES 2019, the world's largest tech conference, runs Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th January.
Over 180,00 visitors are expected to attend the huge annual consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
