Traditional Persian rugs are usually made in cities and workshops where famous master weavers are working. These rugs have a blueprint and guidelines are followed during the entire design.

1. Tabriz - the most popular type of Persian rug by far. Alabaf is one of the workshops from the city of Tabriz. Some of the designs include floral, medallion, Herati or Mahi, and pictorial.

2. Kashan - has formal designs including medallion, allover, and the famous Shah Abbasi.

3. Sarouk - also known as Frahan rugs and has semi-formal designs including the panel, medallion, floral and allover.

4. Mashad - have really high knot density and intricate medallion, floral, and allover designs

5. Qum - has the highest knot density of all Persian rugs. Comes in 2 types, the silk Qum and Cork Qum (made from baby sheep wool). Designs include a floral, medallion, hunting, and pictorial. Almost all Qum rugs have a signature.

6. Isfahan - comes 2nd after Qum rugs when it comes to knot density ranging from 500-700 KPSI. Most of these rugs are made of cork wool. Designs are inspired by nature and the architectural history of Isfahan. Typical designs include floral, hunting, and tree of life. Most have signatures on them.

7. Nain - knot density ranges between 300-700 KPSI and sometimes higher. Pile is usually made of wool with silk highlights with a cotton foundation. These rugs are famous for their creamy ivory background and shades of blue highlights.
