الزار هي طقوس شفاء مجتمعية تتمثل في قرع الطبول والرقص وتمارس النساء تقاليدها بشكل رئيسي - حيث يقوم الرجال بأدوار ثانوية - والمشاركون الرئيسيون فيها هم من النساء. ويقال إن الزار نشأ في شرق أفريقيا، وعلى الرغم من أن ممارسته آخذة في الاختفاء في مصر، إلا أن طقوس الزار تزدهر في أجزاء أخرى من شرق أفريقيا وفي شبه الجزيرة العربية. تعتبر "زار"، التي تتجنبها المؤسسة الدينية والدولة والنخبة الثقافية الرسمية، جزءًا من الثقافة السرية. على هذا النحو، فقد نجت كثقافة فرعية في شكلها الأصلي دون أي تدخل كبير. تختلف العديد من الأغاني والأناشيد متعددة الإيقاعات بشكل مميز عن تقاليد الموسيقى المصرية الأخرى. إلا أن طقوس الزار أصبحت محدودة في محتواها، ونسيت الكثير من الأغاني، وكادت ممارسة الزار في مصر أن تختفي. لا يزال هناك ما لا يزيد عن اثني عشر شخصًا في القاهرة الكبرى على دراية بالتراث الموسيقي للزار. وفي مصر بأكملها، يواصل حوالي 25 شخصًا فقط ممارسة هذه المعرفة وهذا التقليد.

Zar is a community healing ritual of drumming and dancing whose tradition is carried mainly by women – men have secondary roles – and whose main participants are women. The Zar is said to have originated in East Africa and, although its practice is disappearing in Egypt, the ritual flourishes in other parts of East Africa and in the Arabian Peninsula. Shunned by the religious establishment, the state, and the official cultural elite Zar is a part of the underground culture. As such, it has survived as a sub-culture in its original form without any major interference. Many of the poly-rhythmic songs and chants are distinctively different from other Egyptian music traditions. However, the practiced ritual became limited in its content, many songs have been forgotten and the practice of Zar in Egypt has nearly vanished. Not more than a dozen persons within greater Cairo still have knowledge of the musical legacy of the Zar. In the whole of Egypt, only around 25 people continue to practice this knowledge and this tradition.
