The Redfin ads promising 1% commission are borderline fraud.

Redfin plasters it on tv ads and blasts it on the D.C. billboards: They will charge a "1% Listing Fee". Clearly this is a deceptive tactic designed to hoodwink the "dumb customer.". Don't be manipulated by yet another real estate flim-flim scam. Choose a reliable, top flight real estate agent.

Redfin is not alone in this obvious deception. Other "discount brokers" are making similar claims about ultra-low commissions and they get away with this as follows: when pressed, these firms will finally admit that the 1% number is the LISTING AGENT FEE. These firms also charge 3% fee to the Buyer Agent, making the total fee 4%.

Now what type of listing service do you get from Redfin for 1%? Virtually nothing, in fact nothing beyond the absolute bare minimum provided by true real estate brokerages. Redfin is hoping that by having your home listed with them, they will attract buyers who will use a Redfin agent, and then the company can garner a profit from the 3% side of the trade. Slick? well, not really since it is actually quite obvious.

I am well aware that so many people seem to think that real estate sales can be reduced to an Amazon-style transaction, so using an inexperienced crew from an on-line discount operation (which provides no discount in reality, by the way) is quite okay. It will cost you money to do this on almost all circumstances.
