Tansy is an annual yellow-flowered Mediterranean plant native to various parts of Europe. Since the flowers are yellow, this may leave you wondering where the name Blue Tansy comes from. The oil that is gifted to us by this plant is actually a deep blue due to a component called chamazulene. Interestingly enough, chamazulene is actually formed during steam distillation, which explains why the oils are blue but the plants they come from are not. A sesquiterpene compound called matricin, which is found naturally in the aerial parts of chamomile plants, goes through a reaction when it is in the presence of water vapor at high temperatures, creating this sesquiterpene chamazulene with a deep blue hue. Blue Tansy has amazing soothing properties, giving it calming effects on the body, mind and spirit
