Diese Zahnradbahn wurde 1890 nach nur zwei Jahren Bauzeit eröffnet und führt von Capolago über San Nicolao und Bellavista bis zur Bergstation Vetta. Trotz anfänglichem Erfolg blieben die Fahrgastzahlen hinter den Erwartungen zurück, was zu finanziellen Schwierigkeiten und mehreren Betriebseinstellungen führte. Ein Wendepunkt kam 1941, als Gottlieb Duttweiler, Gründer der Migros, die Bahn übernahm. Unter seiner Leitung wurden die alten Dampflokomotiven auf Diesel umgestellt, und 1982 wurde die Bahn elektrifiziert.

Im Jahr 2010 musste das Hotel auf dem Gipfel aus Sicherheitsgründen geschlossen werden. Zwischen 2014 und 2017 wurde die Bahn für umfassende Renovierungen geschlossen, während der Tessiner Stararchitekt Mario Botta das neue Bergrestaurant Fiore di pietra (Steinblume) baute. Seit der Wiedereröffnung 2017 zieht die Bahn wieder viele Besucher an. Heute ist die Ferrovia Monte Generoso eine einzigartige Attraktion in Besitz eines Großverteilers und bleibt eine beliebte Sehenswürdigkeit in den Schweizer Alpen.

Nonostante un inizio promettente, il numero di passeggeri rimase al di sotto delle aspettative, portando a difficoltà finanziarie e chiusure temporanee. Un punto di svolta arrivò nel 1941, quando Gottlieb Duttweiler, fondatore della Migros, rilevò la ferrovia. Sotto la sua guida, le vecchie locomotive a vapore furono convertite in diesel e nel 1982 la ferrovia fu elettrificata.

Nel 2010, l'hotel sulla vetta fu chiuso per motivi di sicurezza. This cogwheel railway was opened in 1890 after just two years of construction and runs from Capolago through San Nicolao and Bellavista to the summit station. Despite initial success, passenger numbers fell short of expectations, leading to financial difficulties and temporary closures. A turning point came in 1941 when Gottlieb Duttweiler, founder of Migros, took over the railway. Under his leadership, the old steam locomotives were converted to diesel, and the railway was electrified in 1982.

In 2010, the summit hotel had to be closed for safety reasons. Between 2014 and 2017, the railway was closed to allow extensive renovations and the construction of a new mountain restaurant, Fiore di pietra (Stone Flower), designed by Ticino architect Mario Botta. Since its reopening in 2017, the railway has once again attracted many visitors. Today, Ferrovia Monte Generoso is a unique attraction owned by a major retailer and remains a popular destination in the Swiss Alps.
