Day 81-83. 72km (62939kms)

Having been whisked out of the room beneath the shop and to the home of the kind shopkeepers we had breakfast together before I set out. When the women aren’t wearing their scarves indoors it creates a fuss to ask to film so my review of tomato jam (!) will have to wait for another day.

After the gorgeous scenery of recent days todays was less dramatic, flattish even, but still impressive with the Sabalan’s snowy peaks off to my right.

Throughout the day I was stopped by motorists and offered water, sharbat (a homemade juice), ice cream, and to have my photo taken. I was stopped by a policeman, but it turned out to be my fellow guest of the hotel in Meshginshahr! I was later flagged down at a police stop by 3 men in green military-type uniforms, but when I replied in English to their Farsi questioning they quickly waved me on, thank goodness.

Once in Ardebil I had an invigorating ride across the busy city to my host Asghar’s place. Here I would spend 2 relaxing days being toured about and fed by his family (an afternoon in an Iranian house means being presented with a constant parade of dishes; a fancy candy like Dime bars, sliced cucumbers, macarons, melon, dates….) Over the weekend I visited the city’s artificial lake, and the famous Sheikh Safi-od-Din Mausoleum. Sadly, being the anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Khomeini the complex was closed, but on seeing a side gate being opened by a delivery driver I put on my sad tourist pleading smile and was allowed in for the quickest run around and a couple of photos. I will try again tomorrow for a proper visit on my way out of town.
