The guards from Madidi National Park paid us a visit to ask us if we would assist them in the rescue of a spider monkey. Spider monkeys (Ateles chamek) are listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
This monkey, a 4 year old female who we re-named Nyx, was the pet of a Bolivian woman who cared for her so much she didn't want to let her go, in fear that we were going to eat her! We assured her we were the last ones who would be eating a monkey!
She didn't understand that the spider monkey was not living an enriching life being tied up to that tree in her garden, but ultimately accepted us to taker her, trusting that she would have a better life in the jungle with the monkeys.

Not long after we brought Nyx to ONCA, The guards of National Park Madidi surprised us with a baby spider monkey in a cardboard box who needed a group to belong to, so now she is the youngest spider monkey member in the group of 9 spiders!
