Networking Is Not What You Think.

Many people say they are networking, but few are confident they understand what the word actually means. For job seekers especially, networking often feels vague, uncomfortable, or even ethically questionable. Some assume it requires extroversion, manipulation, or playing social games that feel unnatural. Others avoid it entirely because they believe it is nothing more than favoritism or backroom deals. This discussion takes a step back and looks at networking for what it really is at a fundamental level. Rather than treating it as a formal process with steps and rules, it reframes networking as something far more ordinary and human. At its core, it is simply people communicating with other people across many different contexts and channels. There is no single correct approach, no universal script, and no checklist that guarantees results. The conversation explores why networking feels confusing in the first place and why attempts to formalize it often miss the point. It also addresses common misconceptions, including the idea that networking is inherently corrupt or unfair. Rather than offering tricks or tactics, this explanation focuses on clarity. When people understand what networking is and what it is not, a great deal of unnecessary anxiety disappears.
