Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent after stroke and is thought to have a significant impact on post-stroke recovery and daily functioning. Hanne Huygelier, PhD, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, shares the findings of a study aiming to classify patients into separable cognitive profiles after stroke. Latent class analysis identified a model made up of 13 distinguishable cognitive profiles. Age, country, gender, and time since stroke were not associated with the cognitive profiles, but lesion site was. It is hoped that by analyzing an individual’s entire cognitive profile, rather than global impairment or assessing a single cognitive domain, more insight into how cognitive impairment couples to recovery and daily functioning can be uncovered. In this way, improved interventions can be put in place for patients with a profile that makes them more vulnerable to certain challenges after stroke. This interview took place at the ESOC 2022 congress in Lyon, France.
