Politics is dominated by talk of left wing and right wing, with little consideration of what this means. In some ways this is a necessary simplification as human beings are drawn to dichotomies. At the very least though, the British must be aware that there are 2 axes: the authoritarian - liberation one and the economic left wing - right wing.

The former is how much liberty you think citizens should have, so for example Stalin and Pinochet were very authoritarian, despite their different economic policies. The latter is loosely to do with how much the state should control the economy, so Pinochet would be very free market and Stalin would be very statist.

The Conservative Party contains a mixture of socially liberal, socially conservative, economically liberal and economically conservative members and this broad church nature is its strength.

The main point about 'creeping normality' is that we should question what we are told in schools, and for young people especially, remember that things may have gone wrong before our lifetimes. The tendency to think that issues such as immigration, feminism and transgender militancy have gone too far only in the last few years is common, as we grumble at yet another compromise we have to make for the sake of 'progress.' But if we learn about history, we can see that public policy on many social issues took a wrong turn decades ago, and thus Conservatives mustn't be afraid to advocate positions today wrongly seen as unacceptably right wing.
