The Zoom site has excellent instructional videos. I have taken screen shots from videos about using Breakout Rooms (from both the host and participant perspectives) and put them into a PowerPoint for my own reference and for guiding my students. I am sharing it here in case anyone else might find it helpful.

1 This is a walk-through of how to Host and Participate in Zoom break-out rooms

The video on the site gives a very good overview.

2 Let's start by seeing what you have to do as a Host….
3 Note that there will be slight differences according to your device .. but what follows shows you what is possible!
4 Before you launch the meeting it is essential that you allow for break-out rooms.
Go to settings / select meeting, then scroll a long way down to 'Breakout room' and click the button to turn it blue. You cannot do this during a meeting, it has to be enabled beforehand.
5 Once the meeting has started, only the host and co-host can see the icon for the breakout room at the bottom
6 Click the icon to get the pop out box
7 Groups are automatically generated
8 If you want to, you can manually move them at this point - in this example, you want Michael to geo in another room, so you click 'exchange' along by his name, the names of those in the other room appear, and you can decide with who you want him to exchange…say, Danny
9 so now Danny is in group 1, and Michael has been moved to 2
You then open all rooms
10 You can see them join ..
In this example, Michael has already joined- he is in bold, and you won't see him in the room
While Carly has 'not joined' so she will still be in your room at the moment
11 Now they are all in - their names are all in bold.
And you can hop between rooms by 'joining'
Once in a room the same box appears and you can join another room or come back to the main one.

Note that if recording, it is always the main room which records.
12 You can always broadcast to the rooms to find out how they are getting on or pass messages - for example warning them that you will be calling them back

14 If you want to manage this to force people to return, click 'close rooms' and they will have one minute to return
15 They see the timer counting down
16 If you click again, you have the option of reopening with the same people

You can force them to move into the room (so not waiting to join) . This could be helpful for people who are a bit lost I suppose!
You can allow them to return at any time.. I think this is a good idea so they don’t feel trapped!
You can set an automatic closure
You can have a countdown after closing the breakout room and you can set the amount of time for countdown
18 If you want to, you can pre-assign groups, but I think for this you have to have their emails already…
19 Here's how you pre-assign …go to your meeting and edit it ..
20 scroll down to breakout rooms.. you can add participants by uploading a list via csv
21 What about participants?
22 I strongly recommend that you check the Zoom site first to see what it will be like for you device ..
23 You will see a message telling you that you have been assigned to a room, and you have to click 'join'
24 This is the message as you join the meeting,, and it may take a few moments..
25 When there, you have the option of clicking on 'ask for help' (the host receive s a message)
26 and here's what the host gets
27 If you want to record, you ask the host who has a control to allow you to record locally
28 You have the option of leaving the breakout room or leaving the meeting
