Hello friends,
BJP leader Sambit Patra, known for his TV appearances, recently sparked controversy with his comments about Lord Jagannath, a highly revered deity in Odisha. Patra referred to Lord Jagannath as a ‘devotee’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Facing backlash, which he called a "slip of the tongue," Patra apologized and announced a three-day fast.
The opposition expressed outrage over this statement. The ruling BJD and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took a strong stance on the issue. On Monday, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik condemned Patra’s remarks, stating they hurt the sentiments of millions of Jagannath devotees and Odia people worldwide. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticized the BJP at a press conference, accusing them of disrespecting Hindu deities and the faith of millions of Hindus. She demanded an apology from Modi, noting it wasn't the first time the BJP had insulted Hindu gods by comparing them to Modi.
Before analyzing Sambit Patra’s candidacy for the Puri seat, let's look at his life and controversies.
Born on December 13, 1974, in Bokaro Steel City, Patra’s father, Ravindra Nath Patra, worked at the Bokaro Steel Plant. He completed his schooling at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bokaro, and earned an MBBS degree from Odisha in 1997. Patra entered politics in 2010, becoming the spokesperson for BJP's Delhi unit. He led several BJP campaigns and contested the municipal election from Kashmere Gate but did not win. In 2014, he was appointed the national spokesperson of the BJP, a position he still holds.
Patra is known for his sharp wit and humor, often remaining in the spotlight. Some describe him as a "circus clown," pointing to his lively and engaging style. However, Patra hasn't been free from controversy. He faces criticism for being overly emotional and sometimes losing control of his tongue.
In September 2017, Patra was appointed an independent/non-official director on ONGC's board for a renewable three-year term. As an active BJP member and official spokesperson, this was seen as a violation of the Companies Act and was challenged in Delhi High Court by the energy watchdog.
In February 2020, Patra tweeted a fake video of former Congress MLA Naseem Khan saying 'Pakistan Zindabad,' leading Khan to file a police complaint against him in Mumbai. On May 18, Patra tweeted photos of a document "toolkit" allegedly used by Congress to tarnish Modi’s image, which Twitter flagged as "manipulated media."
In a 2019 debate on ABP News, Gaurav Vallabh asked Patra how many zeros there are in five trillion. Patra couldn't answer and attacked Rahul Gandhi instead. Vallabh, prepared for this, explained the number of zeros in billion and million, and the video of this debate went viral as a troll on social media.
Friends,
BJP is entering the Odisha elections with high hopes. Several surveys indicate a positive atmosphere for the party. However, BJP leader Sambit Patra's recent comments have stirred up trouble. Patra contested from Puri in the 2019 Lok Sabha election but lost to BJD’s Pinaki Mishra by 13,278 votes. BJD received 5,38,321 votes, while Patra got 5,26,607 votes. Despite this loss, BJP has fielded him again.
Since the 2019 elections, Patra has focused on Puri, distancing himself from national politics and dedicating himself to Jagannath Puri. The party believes his connection to Puri will help secure a victory this time. BJP hasn’t won the Puri seat since 1998. It was held by Congress until 1996. BJD has been unbeatable in Puri since 1998. This time, BJD has fielded former Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik from Puri, and Congress has given the ticket to Jay Narayan Patnaik.
The election in Puri is on Saturday, May 25. Until now, Patra was considered the strongest candidate for this seat. Prime Minister Modi's roadshow also created a positive atmosphere for BJP. However, Sambit Patra's comments have created difficulties for BJP. He acknowledged on Twitter that he mistakenly said, "PM Modi is a strong devotee of Lord Jagannath."
Whether Sambit Patra's apology will prevent electoral damage remains to be seen. Share your thoughts in the comments on whether Patra will win from Puri or not. If you enjoyed the video, please like it and subscribe to our channel. Stay tuned for our next video. Thank you.
