The Purple Tomato developed by Norfolk Plant Sciences is both one of the coolest innovations in home gardening, and a huge point of controversy. It is technically a GMO, which easily puts it into a category that most people don't want to associate with...but it's not that simple.

The Purple Tomato was developed to increase the intake of anthocyanin, which is a powerful plant pigment rich with antioxidants and other health benefits. This can be found in blueberries, eggplant, purple carrots and many other purple or blue herbs and vegetables, but not in tomatoes.

Tomatoes are the most commonly and widely eaten fruit in the world, so the thought process makes sense to turn it into something even better. The patent and rights of growing were what initially gave me pause on whether or not to grow it, but ultimately I decided I would rather have the health and nutritional benefits, and not sell tomato seeds versus other offerings.

My perspective is for my family, my garden and myself but I do believe that if you're not planning to save or sell seeds, or sell tomatoes, then it's well worth growing. The flavor is an absolute culinary delight, and I can't wait to bring this garden to table goodness to a variety of recipes and dishes.
