Akira, a mine destroyer, Itai Aronsberg, a third-year student in the Department of Industrial Design: "Today, more than 100 million mines are scattered around the world, most of which are remnants of past wars. An uncontrolled explosion of temporary mines poses a mortal danger to civilians and causes the deaths of thousands of people every year. In order to minimize the danger, teams of the civilian and military establishment conduct large-scale operations to locate and remove mines. The existing technology is not accurate and cumbersome, and therefore the operations take several weeks to many months during which the teams are exposed to life-threatening situations. "


"As part of the project, I designed AKIRA - an autonomous mine removal vehicle. AKIRA scans the area using an infrared and radar sensor and provides the operator with data on the location of the mines and their depth underground. After the scan, the tool drills in the ground and places the explosive , for a controlled detonation of the mines. " "The work process was very challenging. I was looking for a development field with a distinct technological disadvantage, so that it would be the starting point of my work. The purpose of the project was to create a tool that would replace the human factor and reduce the risk to which the mine clearance teams are exposed, and therefore the complexity of the project was mainly due to attempts to create technological improvement by aoutonomy the actions currently being carried out by humans.
