This is a recording of our webinar that was held on October 15th, 2025, featuring Dr. Diane Larsen-Freeman.

Diane Larsen-Freeman (Ph.D. Linguistics, University of Michigan) is Professor Emerita of Education and of Linguistics, Research Scientist Emerita, and former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan. She is also Professor Emerita at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont and a Visiting Faculty Member at the University of Pennsylvania. Among the many books that she has authored, most relevant to this webinar is her 2003 volume, Teaching Language: From Grammar to Grammaring and her 2008 book with Lynne Cameron, Complex Systems and Applied Linguistics, winner of the Modern Language Association’s Kenneth Mildenberger Book Prize. Also likely of interest to this audience is her co-editing of a special issue of the International Journal of Complexity in Education in 2023.

Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a plenary speaker in 70 countries around the world. She edited the journal Language Learning for five years, and later served as Chair of its Board of Directors. She has received the American Association for Applied Linguists’ highest honor: its Distinguished Scholarship and Service award. Last year, she was inducted as a Fellow into the International Cognitive Science Society at a ceremony in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
