On September 3, Her Migrant Hub—a health care access project for NYC women asylum seekers—opened its own café in the Bronx, Grounds Café, which will be operated by the women asylum seekers who live in the community.

Founded in 2021, Her Migrant Hub is the result of a collaboration between Marciana Popescu, Ph.D., and Dana Alonzo, Ph.D., two Fordham GSS Professors who have built careers as fierce advocates for immigrants worldwide.

Each year, Popescu and Alonzo select an exclusive cohort of Fordham M.S.W. students to assist with HMH’s activities. The experience is a training ground for upstart social workers.

Along with facilitating events and helping with the new café, M.S.W. students participate in HMH’s mental health psychoeducation program. Another collaboration with GML, this initiative provides women asylum seekers in the area with mental health psychoeducation, training them to recognize symptoms, understand what the illnesses mean, and how those illnesses impact functioning on a daily basis. Once trained, the women serve their communities as trusted peers—empowering others to shake the stigmas around seeking help and to create positive change in their lives.
