VML Colombia and Grey Colombia worked with Makro supermarket chain to combat food waste using innovative fruit stickers. These stickers provided 3-4 usage suggestions based on the fruit’s ripeness, such as frying green bananas or making ice cream with yellow ones.

Initially rejected by Makro, the project gained acceptance after a successful test run. The results were impressive: 70 tons of food waste was saved and shelf life was extended by six days. Sticker-labelled fruits also outsold regular ones. This project earned several D&AD Awards, including a Yellow Pencil for Packaging Design for highlighting the power of simple, effective design in solving big problems.

Chief Creative Officer Juan José Posada encourages other supermarkets to adopt this initiative, stressing the global issue of food waste. "Makro won't sue you; it'll help the world. I invite the Tescos and Walmarts to copy this idea," he said.
