This session discusses the continuities in patterns of violence and repression scripted by the Indian state against all forms of people’s resistance in India and Indian Occupied Kashmir: anti-displacements movements resisting the extractive state-corporate nexus; movements resisting the increasing institutionalization of authoritarianism in India and persecution of India’s marginalized communities; and the struggles for self-determination of Kashmiri people in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

The session starts with holding in our thoughts those whose voices could not be directly heard in the webinar: the Adivasi youth human rights defenders of Bastar, many of whom are in prison, or live under constant threat of arrest, many from families scarred by the Salwa Judum pogrom, and who together forged a powerful form of collective resistance, under platforms such as Moolwasi Bachao Manch (MBM), Adivasi Adhikar Bachao Manch, Maad Bachao Andolan and Madhonar Jan Andolan . Since 2021, many MBM members have been arrested in false cases under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act. As protests continued despite such intimidation, the Chhattisgarh government turned to proscription, banning MBM on 30 October 2024 while accusing it of “opposing development works and security camps.” A short film compiled of clips from publicly available material offers a glimpse of what this resistance looked like before it was criminalised.
