The Jackson 5 were on an unprecedented role almost immediately. Their first four singles went to number one on the American pop music sales charts. They immediately went from 5 unknown talent show veterans to international superstars.
The transition was difficult to experience. The idea of moving from the gray wasteland that the steel industry was creating to the the bright lights and glitz of Hollywood must have been jarring. Not only was there a shift in environment and demographic. Their were also knew requirements. Motown had signed the Jackson 5 because they needed a superstar template for the 1970's. The 70's were embracing newer styles. Sly and the family stone were innovating call and response song structure in ways that the Motown and Beatles production style did not utilize. The Corporation, that included the recent college graduates Fonse Mizell, Freddie Perren and veteran songwriter Deke Richards were plugged into the new ethic that was taking over the radio. The Jackson 5 had perfect contrasting vocal styles. Their was Michael the tiny powerhouse whose vocals were rocket fuel for the songs created for them. There was Jermaine, whose vocals had a plaintive yearning mature tone. Occasionally you could also hear Jackie bringing in a very adult Stylistics type of falsetto. Adding to the breakneck speed that the Jackson 5 achieved superstardom was the years of experience that had packed into an extremely shorty 6 years.

Ever since Michael Jackson blew away the audience at his elementary school pageant the Jackson 5 took a northward trajectory. They were already accustomed to arranging their stage act and their vocal performances. Motown had lightning in a bottle and since Berry Gordy was operating on the idea of hitting the J5's demographic with great songs, he had to prep them for hitting the road as well. Susanne de Passe was their de facto manager. That meant she had to shepherd them in every aspect of their transition from mid west talent show winners to global superheroes. She was up to the task.
