The broader concept also exists in literary works and other forms of media where the motif may be an object, word, phrase, image, symbol etc. Among several functions, it serves to establish a central theme of the artwork.

The “flowtif”, short for “rap flow motif”, is a rap flow pattern that occurs throughout a song and helps give it its overall flavour. Lupe Fiasco employs this technique in his single “Cake” from the album “Samurai”, as one of the key ingredients that enables his verses to sound both technical and cohesive at the same time.

An understanding of how to utilize the flowtif could be the key to unlock more mature and sophisticated songwriting in your own work.
