On Saturday, August 16th, Josh Burke enjoyed a fun, glassy, shoulder-high day at his homebreak Soup Bowl in Barbados from the initial pulses of Erin. Nearly two weeks and over 4,000 miles later, Nate Florence scratched into a giant Irish slab from the remnants of the same storm. In between, thousands of surfers from both sides of the Atlantic reaped the benefits of hurricane Erin, some of which you can see above.

What a month and what a storm,” said Surfline’s Florida based forecast principal Charlie Hutcherson, who’d started watching Erin closely when it was just scattered clouds over Africa on August 8th and saw its finale in Africa on August 28th. “Hurricane Erin is gonna go down as one of the most memorable swell makers in the Atlantic. It had a perfect recurving track, avoided the Caribbean and shot the gap between Cape Hatteras and Bermuda and recurved before it hit the northeast. All surf and no land is what we’re looking for, and Erin managed that.”

Timeline:

August 8: The National Hurricane Center began monitoring tropical wave over West Africa.

August 9: The tropical waves moved into the Atlantic.

August 11: Named Tropical Storm Erin.

Aug 15: Erin became a Cat 1 Hurricane.

August 16: Erin underwent explosive intensification overnight and became a major hurricane early on August 16, becoming a Category 5 hurricane by 11:20am. Erin attained its peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 915 mbar (27.02 inHg), about 135 mi (220 km) north-northwest of Anguilla.

Aug 16- 28: The whole North Atlantic Ocean experienced a two week swell event.
