Our speaker is Santiago Martinez Balvanera, PhD candidate at the UCL Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research. Santiago is developing user-friendly software to make some of the complicated parts of bioacoustics analysis easier. Specifically, he is focused on streamlining the curation of annotated datasets to improve machine learning workflows.

In his talk “Promoting Bioacoustics through Open-Source Data Curation and Machine Learning”, Santiago delves into the intersection of bioacoustics, biodiversity monitoring, and machine learning (ML), focusing on the key role of annotated data in advancing the field. The discussion will center on the challenges inherent in data curation, emphasizing the need for user-friendly software solutions. In the talk, he will showcase "Whombat", an open-source initiative, and give an overview of its functionalities aimed at simplifying data curation and integration with ML workflows. Additionally, he will provide an example of how it is being used for development of bat identification models.
