Описание к видео Daniel Morgan crimewatch murder reconstruction

Crimewatch UK – Daniel Morgan Murder Reconstruction (23 April 1987, BBC One)

This supporting media file is taken from Crimewatch UK, Episode 29, first broadcast on Thursday, 23 April 1987 at 9:30 PM on BBC One. The programme featured a reconstruction of the brutal axe murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, which had taken place just six weeks earlier on 10 March 1987 in the rear car park of the Golden Lion pub, Sydenham, South London.

Hosted by Nick Ross and Sue Cook, with Superintendent David Hatcher and PC Helen Phelps on the "Incident Desk," the episode appealed for public information on several unsolved cases, including Morgan’s. The murder was presented as deeply puzzling: Morgan’s partner Jonathan Rees had been briefly arrested and released, three police officers were questioned and then eliminated from inquiries, and no breakthrough had been made.

Crimewatch made repeated references to a missing “contact” or “third party” that Morgan and Rees were due to meet at the Golden Lion. The programme stated:

“He and John Rees had arranged to meet a contact later that evening, again in the Golden Lion. The man they were supposed to meet didn’t turn up and the two of them drank alone.” (04:17, 04:46)

Our investigation has established that this third party contact was Stuart Collier, a News of the World operative — fixer and dogsbody for Crime Editor Alex Marunchak, working in close alignment with Sid Fillery. Evidence from the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel, corroborated by contemporary phone records and testimonies, places Collier as the missing contact alluded to in the programme. He lured Morgan to the Golden Lion under the guise of a story handover and cash exchange, a tactic consistent with Collier and Marunchak’s well-documented practice of “car park” dealings. This explains both why Morgan parked at the rear and why his corruption dossier was retrieved immediately after the murder (05:06, 05:40).

The reconstruction also noted witness accounts of “people looking intently through the window”. We interpret these accounts as lookouts connected to the murder plot, with Collier observing the scene and ensuring the trap was sprung — though the identities of those who carried out the actual killing remain officially unconfirmed (05:46, 06:43).

Other telling details in the programme included:

The vanished gold Rolex Datejust, removed after the crime scene was under police control.

The murder weapon: a Chinese-manufactured axe with a taped handle, described as possibly hidden “in the back of a car or in a boot.”

The haunting image of Morgan’s body lying beside two unopened packets of crisps he had bought for his children.

The broadcast closed with a remark that now resonates chillingly:

“In all major crimes, I feel that obviously there’s the killer or the criminal, but there’s always some other person who suspects that person is responsible.” (08:48)

That “other person” was not a bystander — it was the fixer, the lure, and the missing “third man,” Stuart Collier, who delivered Daniel Morgan into the circumstances that led to his death. The individual who struck the fatal blow has never been identified in law.
