Looking back at the past 38 weeks of Kawai’s Trexo use, I am at a loss for words. I am overwhelmed with emotions seeing how far this little warrior has come.

I have been there for every Trexo session and know he has progressed, but seeing it all put together is pretty amazing!

Kawai has accumulated 29,547 steps to date. He has basically walked 12.6 miles since December. This is a big number for him because he started out by just doing 100-200 steps a session. Just up to 5 minutes at a time.

His best session to date has been 1,200 steps in 28 minutes.

This is the same kid who HATES his stander and refuses to go in it. Who was never a candidate for a gait trainer because he didn’t stand on his own, didn’t initiate steps on his own and did not have the best head control.

Kawai is a different child today.

He is more confident overall in the things he does. Whether it is using his Trexo or working on his standing, he is confident.

His body awareness has gotten better, which has carried over into so many other skills he is working on, like sitting. His head control, core strength, range of motion have all improved. Muscle imbalances, leg spasms, clonus and dystonia have decreased.

Eye contact and tracking, interest in his environment, and vocalizations have all had positive changes. He is initiating steps and he is willing and WANTS to stand now.

Looking at all of the things he has done during his Trexo use I realize what I love most about the Trexo is that it gave him a chance.

The Trexo created an opportunity for him. Essentially it met him where he was at and did not disqualify him because of what he couldn’t do.

I think that is what any family wants. A chance for their child to thrive. Regardless of if they end up completing the opportunity at hand…the point is that it exists.
