Former high school classmates Elizabeth Stokes and Jonathan Pearce met Benjamin Sinclair and Ivan Luketina-Johnson while studying jazz at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Ivan had previously fronted a swing band, The Babyshakes (not to be confused with the New York band Baby Shakes), with the other Beths bandmembers backing him up at various times. Beth Stokes decided to name the new band after herself, inspired by Lorelei Gilmore naming her daughter after herself. Their debut, Future Me Hates Me, was dubbed by Pitchfork "one of the most impressive indie-rock debuts of the year... tight, hook-filled songwriting filled with energy and attitude, paired with lyrics that cut to the bone and a sense of confidence that betrays the record's at-times slackened vibe". Ivan left the band soon after, becoming a senior scholar at the U of Auckland, and the band settled on Tristan Deck as a drummer. Barack Obama featured one of their songs, "Watching the Credits", on his 2023 summer playlist. In 2025, the band signed to ANTI-Records and released the album Straight Line Was a Lie on August 29. Their song "Metal" is a beautiful homage to the fragility and incongruity of being human. "So you need the metal in your blood to keep you alive / And you read the compass in your eyes so you can stay right / So you surf the Earth's magnetic core to keep you alive... And I know I'm a collaboration of bacteria, carbon and light / A florid orchestration, a recipe of fortune and time."
