When Spaces Sang..


When you have lived decades together in a house, it becomes more than just a built structure, rather, a storehouse of memories, events and attachments.. So to bring it down, to put up another in its place, is a challenge in itself….introduce a better one in its place can be the only way out.
The Paul residence at Thrikkakkara, Kerala,has been an example of how to enjoy the make over of one’s home.
The clients Mrs and Mr. Paul, had an existing bungalow spanning 4500 sft in the same grounds for years..The typical Portuguese Dutch influence in the grand architectural image of Kochi reflected in the old structure. Changing times and lifestyle demanded a relook on the “home ground”. The clients approached the design team with a dialogue on how to go about “redoing” a much loved home. The site grounds, with its existing vegetation and gentle contours offering an explosion of ideas of the designer. Studio Design Decode approached the new requirements with a fresh look while holding on to the sensitivity to the old building. The existing three bed room villa was to be converted to another three bedroom villa with ample socialising spaces for the clients. This indeed posed a challenge to the team, to present a “nouve” space experience to the inhabitants and an unforgettable memory to the guests..Thus emerged the concept of ‘Song of Spaces.’to remember and to sing along. The symphony of architecture when complete in May 2018 was 8200 ft in expanse standing on 1.5 acres of ground.
As the process began, it was agreed upon to retain the existing plinth and then work towards expansion. Hence, the new structure would retain the basics from which it grew. Technically, this also posed a challenge on how to reprogram the old despite saving a huge chunk of time, labour and money of sub structure. The plan is like a huge jolt on a large single spread of a plan creating an orderly shift. Interestingly, the new plan, offered both primary axes of the plan to run along the public spaces which is the crux of the house.
