You have seen those countdown timers at traffic signals, right? We don’t realize it, but they are one of the smartest safety measures ever taken.

Several studies across countries have shown how accidents at intersections significantly reduced after installing these green light timers.

The reason is simple - people love control and hate uncertainty. When they don’t know how long to wait, they have a greater urge to jump the signal.

And this is the same reason why so many of us still haven’t subscribed to YouTube premium. When ads are shown, there’s a timer that displays how long you have to wait.

If YouTube removes this timer, I’m reasonably sure many people will upgrade to a premium account.

One of the most effective ways to hack human behaviour is by playing with our sense of control. The moment we lose control or become uncertain about future, we start acting differently.
