Unpopular opinions: 8 minutes, or less if played at 1.5x speed, on another perspective of war. I wish I did a better job, but I wanted to put out reasons for thinking differently about conflicts. I continuously hear people talking about some of the same bad ideas and strategies that have lost every major conflict since WWII. Escalation probably won’t happen. Protecting the populace is a losing strategy. These should be known by anyone who was involved in a post-WWII conflict or has looked at history. The GWOT was a complete failure, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. We have not evolved past fighting wars the way WWII was conducted. Pretending we have only results in more conflicts, conflicts lasting longer, and worse outcomes. Most wars should not be fought. Targeted strikes, targeted killings, limited operations, and deterrence through strength should be effective for most situations. But just wars happen and should be fought with a level of destruction that quickly and decisively ends the conflict.

When I was in the Army, I applied for a PhD program. I wanted to write my dissertation on why wars end. My hypothesis was that wars end when one side quits, and what makes one side quit is exhaustion. Death and suffering through barbarism bring about exhaustion. I’m furthering the ideas that Ivan Arreguín-Toft wrote about and what Curtis LeMay put into practice. My conclusion was going to be, don’t go to war unless it is worth resorting to barbarism. The goal is less wars.
