In 2012, Pavel Durov tossed paper airplanes made from 5,000 ruble notes (£122) and watched a brawl break out below his company’s St. Petersburg offices.

Durov, then 27 years old and whose net worth was valued at around £168 million, was accused of enjoying the moment as the crowd erupted to grab the money.

He later described this moment as “one of the funniest moments in the history of our company.” He explained that they were celebrating a big bonus for a friend and vice president at the company. “We began to congratulate him: ‘You’re a rich guy now,’” Durov said.

Durov recounted that the vice president replied, “I don’t work for money. Money is completely not important to me. The idea is what’s important to me.”

Durov responded, “Look, if it’s only the idea that’s important, why don’t you throw away the money? Get rid of it.”
