Rand advised viewing one's accounting career as a long-term journey. He emphasized balancing work with health and family. He stated, "Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. You'll be working for 40 years, so take care of yourself." Bernadette agreed, as she responded, "That's a lot of years. You don't need to be a CFO in 5 years. You can take it slow." Rand concurred, mentioning the importance of learning and professional development.
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂
Rand was fortunate to have mentors and people who championed him, as he expressed, "When decisions are made about promotions or who gets staffed, you need someone to champion you." When Bernadette asked about seeking mentorship, Rand advised establishing oneself first: "Show that you're worth investing in. People will notice, and you can develop that relationship."
𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Rand expressed his love for technical accounting, distinguishing it from routine tasks. He described it as intellectually challenging and always presenting new problems. Rand valued how technical accounting provides insights into broader business strategies: "When tackling a technical accounting problem, you must understand the economics and what's going on in the business."
𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆
Rand worked at Ernst & Young in Los Angeles, where he was part of their technical accounting group. During his time there, he talked about having collaboration over competition. After having experience in M&A, IPOs, and derivatives, he transitioned to his first industry role at Resideo.
𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼
Rand is hiring a Senior Technical Accountant for positions in Arizona, Utah, and North Carolina. This position is ideal for those interested in technical accounting. He described it as "a really cool role" where 75% involves challenging technical accounting tasks.
𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱'𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Bernadette commented on Rand's LinkedIn activity where he shows his technical expertise and sense of humor. Rand responded as he showcased the lighter side of accountants. "Yeah, I like to throw a little of that in. Not all accountants are boring." He recently posted a poll about the best tattoo for an accountant. Bernadette preferred the T-account option because of its relevance to her clients.
𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿
Rand advised championing others at work: "You can have a huge impact by caring about the people you work with, being a good person, and working well with everyone. That ultimately is what's most important in a career."
