This project is an immersive interactive digital twin experience that explores the oil platforms off the coast of Santa Barbara. Built using Unreal Engine 5, it leverages Cesium for real-world geospatial data and Google Photogrammetry API via Cesium to create a highly accurate and visually rich environment.

At its core is a custom interactive system I developed within Unreal Engine 5, enabling users to seamlessly switch between first-person view, orbit mode, fly mode, and full virtual reality support. I enhanced this system by integrating and customizing the ArchViz Viewer template from the Epic Marketplace, combining its powerful architectural visualization features with real-time geospatial exploration tools. The result is a unified, robust application for navigating and examining offshore infrastructure in an intuitive and high-fidelity digital space.

The Santa Barbara Channel is home to a group of offshore oil platforms located along the southern coast of California. Installed primarily between the 1950s and 1980s, these platforms were built to extract oil and natural gas from underwater reserves. A total of 23 oil and gas platforms were installed in the channel, with several still active today under operators like ExxonMobil and DCOR.

The platforms are spaced across federal and state waters and are named with both alphabetical and personal names (e.g., Platform Houchin, Platform C). They have become iconic structures, symbolizing both the region's industrial development and environmental challenges—most notably the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, which was a catalyst for the modern environmental movement in the U.S.

Today, these platforms are the subject of environmental debate, aging infrastructure concerns, and discussions around decommissioning or repurposing them, such as converting some into artificial reefs.
