When I first got this truck I wasn't sure I was going to be able to fix the smoke on start up. Knowing that it had new injectors installed years prior and very little run time. I had originally assumed the engine maybe warn out. Thankfully I tend to dwell on vehicles I'm working on and don't ever stop thinking about them until I know they're fixed.
Experience I've gained from working on these engines for years definitely made this repair go smooth. No money was wasted with parts that were not needed. I spent time comparing data from another truck. Didn't know owning my own 6.0 would end up helping me but makes sense now.
I followed my gut to fix this truck.
Rebuilding injectors is no small task. If anyone is thinking about doing this to their truck. Make sure you have an area that you can be left alone and a work area that no one else will mess with. Leaving one of the injectors disassembled and loosing some internal parts could mean buying a new injector. lots of the injector parts are available but many are not.
After rebuilding the injectors and installing them. The truck started like any other 6.0 does after high pressure oil system repair. long crank until it makes enough pressure to fire the injectors.
Instantly after the engine started I could tell it was a success. The engine was idling smoother all ready. It did smoke but that is common after this repair. After test driving and verifying the smoke was gone on start up and I no longer felt the slight mis fire. I focused on the long crank. I new it had good batteries. Again I was suspecting the engine maybe warn out and it had too crank a little more to make enough compression to start. But I was still questioning the way the engine and starter sounded when cranking. It always sounded like the starter was really trying. Again, after years of working on these trucks I get use to the way they normally sound and operate. I knew I wanted to replace the starter. Then remembered a 6.7 Powerstroke starter would fit with a new bolt and bushing. I was successful and found a bolt and bushing that fit perfect. The 6.7 starter went on with no modifications other than the bolt. Which didn't require any fabrication. If the starter failed, nothing special has to be done. Swap it out for another 6.7 starter.
Cranking the engine for the first time, I was positive the new starter fixed the laboring old starter that was on the engine. These two problems were very satisfying to fix. I hope you enjoyed the video. Hopefully it helps someone fix their truck.
