Over the past two days, the Huajiang Gorge Bridge, the world's tallest bridge, has been undergoing load testing, a crucial test before its opening to traffic. Load testing, often called a "full physical examination," is a crucial step in verifying the bridge's structural safety and load-bearing capacity before its opening. The Huajiang Gorge Bridge load tests primarily consist of static and dynamic load tests. (The Huajiang Gorge Bridge load test consists of three phases: no-load testing, static load testing, and dynamic load testing. The entire process will last four days.)

This morning (August 25th), the #HuajiangGorgeBridge underwent its final static load test, with 96 test trucks loading the bridge. The vehicles, divided into five groups, entered the bridge symmetrically from both ends and stopped along the bridge's centerline. The test fleet progressed in batches of 24, 48, 72, 84, and 96 vehicles. Each truck carried 35 tons, ultimately resulting in the bridge bearing a load of approximately 3,360 tons. This simulated a large-scale traffic jam, allowing testers to examine the stress and strain, deflection, displacement, and cable tension in key components of the bridge's systems.

Previously, the bridge underwent static load tests and dynamic load tests on 18 and 48 vehicles respectively. After preliminary analysis of the data by the testing team, all results were within the calculated limits.

the Huajiang deck level needing to be at an elevation of at least 1,100 meters, the engineers had no choice but to go across the 625 meter deep gap with a suspension span of epic proportions. The decision was made to go with a stiffened steel truss with a main span of 1,420 meters or 10 meters longer than the Humber Bridge, a suspension span in the UK that held the record as the world’s longest suspension bridge for 17 years. The steep slope on the north side of the Huajiang Canyon also required the construction of a concrete tower 262 meters tall with the south tower being a more normal-sized 205 meters tall. The total length of the bridge is 2,890 meters with more than two dozen approach spans of 40 meters.
