Описание к видео USA: NATIONAL ARCHIVE RELEASE CONFIDENTIAL FILES

(26 Feb 1999) English/Nat

The American National Archive has released 111-thousand pages of confidential files, and more than 124 tape-recorded conversations from the Nixon administration.

On Thursday journalists were allowed to flip through files and listen to conversations recorded by Richard Nixon's secret taping system at the White House.

On one of the newly released tapes, President Nixon is heard discussing a break-in at the Chilean Embassy in Washington.

According to a transcript made by the Nixon Library, President Nixon tells White House counsel J. Fred Buzhardt Junior - "When we get down, for example, to the break-in, the Chilean Embassy - that thing was part of the burglars' plan, as a cover. Those assholes are trying to have a cover - or a C-I-A cover. I think Dean concocted that."

The conversation was recorded in the Oval Office May 16, 1973.

A break-in at the Chilean Embassy was reported in the newspaper at the time, but no link was made to the White House.

Presidential Historian Stephen Hess says while new information about Nixon adds to the picture, it won't add a new dimension to the man or his presidency.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There are very few presidents that we know as much about as we know about Richard Millhouse Nixon. So, it adds to the richness of it. As an historian, I would love to have had some of these verbatim things to use in books. But, I doubt there will be another new Nixon."

The documents released today also contained information about the Pentagon Papers, the assassination of Vietnam's President Diem in 1963, and the famous Watergate cover up that led to Nixon's resignation.

The information made public on Thursday had been withheld by the archives because they covered matters with national security implications.

More tapes are scheduled to be released over the coming months.
