Dr. Chris McPherson explains how image-guided surgery (IGS) technology is used in the operating room. Similar to a GPS for your car, an IGS system helps the surgeon locate and safely navigate in the brain to remove tumors and other lesions. Special cameras and pointers track the location of instruments on a computerized "3D map" of a patient's MRI scans. The surgeon will use the IGS pointer to check the edges of the tumor and avoid critical structures. At the end of surgery, the IGS is used to track the tumor cavity and confirm that all tumor has been removed.

All of this precision shortens operating times and allows for smaller incisions, which translates into faster recoveries and better results for patients. It also means that patients with conditions considered "inoperable" in the past now have an option.
