This painting is part of the series created for my solo show, A JoyEful Party Animal Walks into a Bar . . . This show celebrates the official trademarks of the DUI-Donkeys Under the Influence® and JoyEful Party Animals®.

Numerous times I get the question, “Where do I get the ideas for my paintings?” Inspiration for this show comes from life experiences and happy hour conversations.  My favorite are the text happy hours with family around the country. I reached out to my family members that enjoyed the adventure of going to get penny candy.  We reminisced about their favorite candy and memories of our penny candy adventures.
My grandma always carried Black Jack, Clove or Beechman gum in her purse. My grandparents use to bring us candy wrapped in a dollar or a five-dollar bill. Inflation raised the candy wrapper as we got older!

Many of us experienced the childhood thrill of buying penny candy.
The painting Candy Bad Ass brings out that childhood rebel side.  Candy cigarettes, cigars and pirate gold coins were some of our favorite candy.  The alcohol candy came when I was of legal age. The idea came from my happy memories with my siblings and cousins walking to the local stores to buy penny candy. Going to the store with my cousins was always blissful shenanigans. Of course, we loved to buy the “bad ass” candy that made our parents nuts.

I have tons of photos of Josie the donkey from her many visits to my studio and gallery.  I did not have photos of all my childhood favorite penny candy.  That is where this sweet adventure kicked into sugar fueled research!  I visited to candy stores and the online stores to collect my loot to photograph for this series.   
It was fun finding penny candy, researching, buying, setting up still life compositions for this painting. Of course, the best part was eating my props!

What a fun adventure talking with my family getting their stories of their favorite penny candy! The stories and memories kept me smiling though the long hours at my easel.
