☔November is my favorite month. Intimate and quiet, it carries the scent of rain blending with the warmth of wood smoke. It is the month of colorful umbrellas and the first, gentle shades of melancholy.
🎹 With Farewell in Florence, Clara Whitmore delivers her most intimate and mature work: a jazz album that does not merely tell stories but creates true emotional landscapes. The lyrics, dense with poetic imagery, move between memory, loss, and identity, intertwining urban atmospheres with private confessions.
💫 By her side stands Italian composer Fabio Bencivenni, the musical soul and architect of the album. Their bond is palpable: a constant dialogue between word and sound, between confession and improvisation. Their artistic and emotional connection was born from their very first meeting in Italy—an encounter that immediately sparked a creative complicity, evolving into a partnership capable of shaping a unique language.
The title track, “Farewell in Florence”, is a ballad of farewell in which the Tuscan city becomes the symbolic stage of a love worn out. Here, Bencivenni’s poetic writing and Whitmore’s interpretative depth intertwine with natural ease: the voice narrates, the piano responds, and together they compose a luminous fresco of melancholy.
With “My Family” and “My Father”, the album dives into personal memory: jazz is not only a soundtrack but living matter, made of kitchenware that resounds like instruments and paternal solitudes portrayed first through the eyes of a child, then of an adult. Bencivenni accompanies these stories with essential arrangements, amplifying the intimacy without ever overshadowing the voice.
“The Final Colorless Chord” perhaps represents the album’s peak: a piece that reflects on personal identity, on the search for authentic love, and on the desire to break free from imposed roles. Here, the chemistry between the two artists shines through: Whitmore’s voice becomes a question, while Bencivenni’s saxophone and piano provide both answer and counterpoint.
In “The Great Blue Chessboard”, visionary images — the blue chessboard reflected in the glass, the inevitable errors of each move — echo through a deliberately unstable musical fabric, woven of suspended harmonies and sudden silences.
“The Last Wave” takes the form of a poetic epitaph: waves, breaths, and silences compose a meditation on endings. Here Bencivenni balances minimalism with refinement, allowing the voice to emerge like a suspended whisper. The track is known to be dedicated to a late Italian artist, deeply cherished by the composer.
Finally, “Wax Stars” closes the album with a mosaic of nocturnal imagery: empty trams, letters never written, jazz cafés deserted after the last jam session. It is a piece that captures the precariousness of memory, the fragility of time, and the ephemeral magic of music—sealing the bond between singer and composer.
Overall, Farewell in Florence is much more than an album: it is the meeting of two artistic souls. Clara Whitmore brings the strength of a voice that is both narration and confession; Fabio Bencivenni, with his refined writing, provides the emotional frame that enhances every nuance. Together, they have created a work that unites poetry and jazz, personal diary and universal vision.
🎹 “The river carries us away, silencing the piano keys…”
🎭 “Laughter drowned in a glass no one wants to drink…”
Let yourself be wrapped in this jazz elegy — a powerful and aching farewell woven through velvet chords and suspended truths.
