The Panoz Esperante GTR-1 is a GT1 car that raced at Le Mans, in the FIA GT Championship and in ALMS in 1997 and 1998. Panoz Motorsports was created from scratch and aimed at the top level of endurance racing, battling against Porsche 911 GT1, Mercedes CLK GTR and CLK LM, McLaren F1 GTR long tail, Nissan R390 GT1, and Toyota GT-One. The cars were raced by DAMS and David Price Racing for the first season, then Panoz Motorsports from 1998.

It is built around a 6.0L V8 Ford engine prepared by Roush, placed in an uncommon front mid-engined configuration. This was a requirement by Don Panoz to keep the link the Roadster road cars built by his son Dan. Like the best cars of the era, the car featured a carbon monocoque chassis and inboard pushrods suspensions. A X-trac 6-speed sequential gearbox was installed as the back of the car, used as a stress member. Power was 600hp for a 960kg weight in Le Mans configuration.

Le Mans
Finished 7th at Le Mans in 1998, considered by many as the race of the century. Official entries included the Mercedes CLK LM, Toyota GT-One, Porsche 911GT1-98, second version of the Nissan R390 GT1, and BMW with their V12 LM. It was only the second participation of Panoz at Le Mans. The GTR-1 is and remains the fastest American GT car at Le Mans (3:40.730 in qualifying in 1998).
