Newfoundland AND Labrador: Canada's Divided Province

The easternmost province of Canada is made up of the island of Newfoundland and the continental region of Labrador. Divided by the 20km wide Strait of Belle Isle, how is this province made up of 2 separate regions, why did it only join Canada in 1949 and what is being done to connect Newfoundland with Labrador?
