The term “dormant ties” is an example I first heard from Rutgers professor Daniel Levin over a decade ago. It is much easier to relaunch a business relationship with someone you knew in the past than it is to start fresh with a stranger.

In our world of being socially distant, people just may need to hear from you…. and when you take ownership and reach out to people, it might lead to new business opportunities.

When I work with companies and law firms, one of the exercises I have them do is to identify a list of key people whom they used to be close with in the past. I have them select people with whom they drifted apart from, not those with a negative parting of ways (but there are ways to relaunch broken relationships, too).

In this video I mention one way to identify these people, but there are many ways to create the list. Then you start calling (or email..but phone is better). Not everyone will be as engaged and excited to hear from you, but many will be thrilled.

Awakening dormant ties is a great way to network. It takes effort, and you wont have a "love connections" with everyone. Yet if your know that all opportunities come from people, you will quickly learn why networking is so important for sustained career success.
