Cumberland City Council in Sydney's west is copping flack after voting to ban same-sex parenting books from its libraries.

The NSW government is threatening to withhold funding to the council as a result.

Cumberland City Councillor Steve Christou says it is a reflection of the views from the “majority” of his local community.

Mr Christou told Sky News host Chris Kenny that the Cumberland community holds “deeply conservative family and religious values”.

“They are very concerned.”
