Once, Lord Shiva’s sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, had a disagreement about who should get married first. Unable to settle the dispute, they turned to their parents for a resolution. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati proposed a condition – whoever completed a full revolution around the Earth first would be married first.

Excited by the challenge, Kartikeya, with his swift peacock vehicle, set off immediately. However, Lord Ganesha faced a challenge with his slow-moving mouse vehicle. Wisely, Ganesha circumambulated his parents, considering them equivalent to the Earth, completing the condition.

When Kartikeya returned, he discovered Ganesha had already been married, realizing the cleverness of his brother. Disappointed, Kartikeya left for Mount Kailash, where Goddess Parvati explained the situation.

Lord Shiva, appearing as the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, urged Kartikeya to understand the significance of Ganesha’s decision. This marked the establishment of the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga on Mount Shaila, making worshiping Lord Shiva at this mountain a sacred act.

Devotees believe that visiting Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga and offering prayers here brings spiritual merit and blessings. It is considered highly auspicious to perform the sacred pilgrimage known as “Mallikarjuna Parikrama.”
